Unschooling Writing Tips

Have a reluctant writer and prefer a more unschooling-ish approach?

Work it into the day-to-day, and believe the process of when it's important to them, they'll be ready to learn how.

Here are a few ideas to get a reluctant writer writing (or in some cases working on one piece of the writing process at a time):

  • write notes to each other

  • have your child make lists

  • play typing games

  • get a pen-pal (regular mail or email)

  • have them dictate to you what they want to say

  • roller coaster writing (set a timer and let the ideas flow but ONLY for 2 min or 5 min, whatever you decide)

  • tell a story with pictures

  • tell a story by acting it out (no words!)

  • have them create a treasure map or scavenger hunt

  • make sticky-note labels for everything in the house (the more silly the better!)

  • teach someone else how to write
