Learning From TV? Yep.

We don't do a lot of screen time, but we sprinkle it in here and there, and try to keep a balance. On sick days, it's usually a TV marathon with some stories intermixed, and I'm pretty sure my kids think that's the one good thing about being sick!

But even while watching TV, they're learning. Here are some of their favorite shows, and ones I recommend:

Science:

  • Mythbusters - around school-age, some more appropriate for older audiences, use your judgement
  • Science Max - around school-age
  • DIY Sci - around school-age
  • Sci Show Kids - good for littles
  • How It's Made - all ages
  • Zoo shows (Secrets of the Zoo, The Zoo: San Diego, The Zoo: Bronx Zoo, Crickey! It's the Irwins, there are lots to choose from!) - all ages, but use judgement for medical content and sad cases
  • Vet shows (Dr. Oakley, Heartland Docs, The Vet Life, again lots to choose from!) - all ages, but use judgement for medical content and sad cases

History

  • Expedition Unknown - around school age, some more appropriate for older audiences, use your judgement
  • History's Mysteries - varies greatly

Social/Emotional

  • Paw Patrol - good for littles (though my kids still like it!)
  • Daniel Tiger - good for littles
  • Bluey - good for littles
